Why Your School Needs to Get Involved a Manufacturing Career Awareness Program
Friday, September 28, 2018
South Dakota's Dream it. Do it. "What's So Cool About Manufacturing?" contest is aimed at closing the manufacturing skills gap by engaging, educating and exciting middle school students about careers in manufacturing. Jack Pfunder, president of of the Manufacturers Resource Center stated, "the goal of the contest is to make manufacturing attractive and cool in the eyes of eighth graders."
Over the course of the contest, students take a field trip to their partnered manufacturer to capture footage of the facility on their iPad, interview employees, and learn more about the products they make. Each team has a semester to create a short video profile on their partnered manufacturer while answering the question, "What's So Cool about Manufacturing?"
Final entries are judged by an expert panel and winners are awarded gift cards and other prizes.
It's not only a good opportunity for students to learn about the technical field, but vital to our economy. It's predicted by 2025, two million manufacturing jobs will likely go unfilled due to baby boomers retiring and economic expansion.
Let's continue to keep American manufacturing strong by showing our kids the rewarding careers manufacturing has to offer.
