Leadership Development for Growing Lloyd Companies

Tuesday, September 26, 2017

"This isn’t one of those day-long workshops with lots of great ideas that never get implemented. The training in this course provides a long-term, sustainable platform to improve the consistency of our operations."

- Christie Ernst, Vice President

High-profile projects make the Lloyd Companies a prominent business in South Dakota’s largest city, Sioux Falls. The family-operated firm is a full-service property management, real estate, construction and development company with more than 170 employees. The staff manages more than 4,000 apartment units, 1.5 million square feet of commercial space and $60 million in annual construction.

In the past, the growing company has done a good job training staff members to effectively manage. In spite of this the company felt it hasn’t devoted much attention to developing managers’ abilities to work with staffers. Management wanted to train their managers how to be leaders and how to work with people.

The Lloyd Companies recently invested in helping their managers become better leaders. The company got help from South Dakota Manufacturing & Technology Solutions (MTS), a NIST MEP affiliate. MTS specializes in services such as production assessments and improvement projects that help companies grow and prosper. The agency has access to public and private resources, including leadership-development services offered by Precision Leadership Group Inc. (PLG). The owner of PLG focuses the sessions she facilitates for MTS on developing leaders, not training them. Sessions are not compressed into workshops that last a day or two. She met with seven Lloyd managers in weekly, two-hour sessions for 12 weeks. The schedule gave participants time to process information, prepare for the next meeting and demonstrate changes in behavior before all the sessions were completed.

  • Reduced employee turnover by 50% through leadership development
  • Beneficial training, one bad hire could cost the company more than the training
